The House That Ivy Built Encyclopedia

MIKI

[Miki] Miki Yamada
Series role: At the end of Book 2, Miki is a new roommate for the house. This functions to show the reader how Ivy goes on missions and what they’re like (since when Book 1 starts it’s obvious she’s been on many missions but they’re all in the past), and Miki is interested in psychic phenomena, which introduces a side plot in Book 3. Contributes grant money that she was awarded for living expenses for college.

THE PHYSICAL:

Vitals: Long, straight, thick black hair with thick bangs. Small brown eyes set at a slant. Japanese-American. Early twenties, slightly shorter than average, slightly pudgier than average.

Other features: Very round-looking face that makes her look younger and a winning smile with twinkling eyes. Slightly nasal but pleasant voice. Gestures excitedly while speaking. Wears comfortable jeans or shorts and sleeveless tanks in the summer, long-sleeved button-downs or sweaters in the winter.

THE PERSONAL:

Talents/Abilities: Fantastic technical artist. Good at research. Knows a ton about parapsychological experiments. Very friendly and curious. Good in general at science.

Weaknesses/Shortcomings: Can talk a person’s ear off even if they’re not interested. Because she’s so interested in ESP but is not talented in that way herself, she can get jealous and give some of her “special” roommates a hard time when they complain.

Interests: The paranormal, reading, architecture, her roommates, talking, computers.

Other information: College student, architecture major. Registered Democrat. Family is Christian, but she doesn’t follow their traditions. Interested in men but doesn’t date often, wants to be married someday. Gets along with Ivy, Thursday, Zeke, and Zeke’s friend Sharon.

THE STORY:

Ivy was told she had to go on a mission to find this Miki Yamada chick, so off she went to Miki’s college. She met with her, said she was looking for a roommate, and commented on the ESP book she was reading. Ivy listened to her gab for a long time and then offered her own knowledge on the subject, which intrigued Miki (of course). They made a date to have Ivy show her the house. Later, the date came through, and Miki learned all about Ivy’s roommates and agreed to live there. In Book 3, had some of the house members participate in a grad student’s experimental administering of some tests as a side plot.
