The “Ivy Books,” also known as The House That Ivy Built, were never written with the intent of being high philosophy, or particularly “deep,” or full of morals and lessons. Nevertheless, it’s been pointed out by many a reader that there is much to be learned from Ivy and her companions.
The books contain some obviously wise characters: Adele, Nicholas, even little Nina—all of them have plenty to say on plenty of subjects to help those of us who have a narrower perspective. But even characters who are naïve, innocent, or just plain ignorant can teach us many important lessons . . . and not just from letting us watch them make mistakes. “Wisdom” is definitely not a word that gets associated with Ivy often, but it is undeniable that she has a unique perspective. And sometimes, in spite of it or even because of it, she can be surprisingly profound.
In her own way, of course.
Ivy always does everything her own way.
And that is one of many ways we can learn from her.
This book is mostly just a collection of quotes from the Ivyverse—from the continuing prequel online comic Negative One to the in-progress series proper The House That Ivy Built book five—with each subject introduced and explained to put the quotes in perspective.
You can learn a lot from this book, or just sit back and enjoy it. It’s designed for folks who are already fans of the series, but it can be for anyone. Each quote includes attribution (which character said it, where, and in what), so that you can easily find that part and re-read it in context if it inspires you (assuming you have access to the books).
And remember . . . important advice can sometimes come from very unexpected sources.
