The House That Ivy Built Encyclopedia

THTIB FAQ

This section refers to questions frequently asked about the books themselves. There is a second FAQ in the section for “The Author” regarding other information about the creation process of the books and whatnot; this is purely in reference to the world of THTIB without acknowledging its creator.

1. Does Ivy have wings? Anyone who’s read the first book past chapter 2 would know the answer is no. She flies using her energy. Some people briefly make the assumption that she has wings because Weaver is described before she is and then she is seen flying with no explanation.

2. Are Ivy and Bailey related? No. For a while they think they might be, but Ivy finding her parents in Book 4 makes this impossible.

3. How old is Ivy? She doesn’t know for most of her life exactly how old she is and tends to overestimate. She is four years old when Book 0 starts. She is sixteen when Book 1 starts. And by Book 5, she is eighteen.

4. How old is Adele? That’s largely indeterminate, but she is between thirty-five and forty at this point.

5. Can Ivy have children? No. She’s physically immature and has never had a menstrual period. She physically could not have children even if she decided she wanted them.

6. Is there anything else peculiar about Ivy’s anatomy besides the obvious things (her eyes, her ears, her physical immaturity, and her hands)? A lot of smaller things. Her eyes look odd, but they also have phenomenal distance vision. Her ears also look odd, and besides that they work almost too well. Her skin hardly ever sunburns but stays pale. She’s never lost a tooth and to this day has her little baby teeth. She’s strangely resistant to cold temperatures. And she’s double-jointed and very flexible.

7. Are there other people with Ivy’s powers? Yes, but so far no one on her level. Max is the closest to her ability level, arriving in Book 4. Nicholas also has a form of energy that allows him to simply make winds; he arrives in Book 4 also. Her acquaintance Adam can bend metal by thinking about it, but he doesn’t count for much—and he’s in Book 2.

8. What are the limits on Ivy’s powers? She can’t use them reliably while she’s asleep. She can’t use them to handle very hot, very cold, or dangerously electrically-charged objects because her energy conducts these attributes. She can’t move more than a few things in different patterns at a time. She can’t move anything too small to see. Her control is not as good with non-solid objects.

9. How many toes does Ivy have? Eight. Four on each foot.

10. What powers do other people in the books have? Adele and Nina share a strong clairvoyant ability, and so does Nicholas to a lesser degree (he accurately uses Tarot cards). Adele and Nina can also place thoughts in others’ minds and in some cases attach feelings to them to change people’s minds. Skyler can read people’s thoughts and in some cases read the future and get psychometric readings. Max has a low-grade form of telekinesis and so does Nicholas (he uses it to create wind).

11. Will Nina’s little brother Erik eventually develop powers like her? No.

12. Nina sometimes talks about how she’s acquiring other abilities, so what other powers might she get? She will continue to improve with her clairvoyant abilities but everything she learns to do will be in some way related to that.

13. Why isn’t Ivy a superhero? Because she doesn’t want to be. Though she does go through a phase of superheroing in Book 5.

14. What happens if Bailey appears inside of a solid object? She won’t be hurt, but she’ll probably destroy whatever she appeared inside of. The air vibrates a little before she appears and normally pushes things aside unless they are very stationary like walls.

15. Can Bailey appear out of her clothes? Yes.

16. Why do Bailey’s clothes come with her when she jumps? She can decide whether to take them with her. Basically, every molecule of her body is “allowed” to take one more molecule with it. So she can transport herself and anyone/anything that has up to the same number of molecules as she does.

17. Does Bailey have to have been to a place to teleport there? No. It depends more on her perception of space, though having been to a place helps acquire that perception. Nina can also give Bailey senses of places that are strong enough so that she can teleport there.

18. How fast can Ivy fly? Around 70 mph. She has to stop if she can’t breathe anymore.

19. Where is the house? On the coast of Connecticut in an undisclosed location.

20. Weaver, Dax, and Thursday are unusually-sized members of the house, so do they wear clothes? If so, why? Weaver and Thursday don’t really wear clothes. Weaver always has his sword belt and chest harness for it on, and Thursday always wears a wrist-size change purse pack around his waist so he can carry things. Dax is rather large but can fit into big men’s clothes and prefers to do so. He feels that he wore clothes in his home dimension and wouldn’t feel right without them.

21. Will Ivy ever have a relationship or get married? That’s still to be seen, but as such she has no such inclination.

22. Can Ivy move the clouds? She can blow winds on them. They aren’t solid, so she can’t just pick them up and move them.

23. Is Ivy ever going to mature? That’s very unlikely. Her growth hormones worked—maybe a little too well—but none of the other ones seem to have kicked in and they are past due.

24. Ivy doesn’t brush her teeth, according to the books. Do the house members have any kind of dental hygiene? While living outdoors, Adele made them all chew on certain sticks to promote good teeth. In Book 4 Max taught Ivy to brush her teeth and she started doing so regularly.

25. What kind of creatures are Adele, Alix, Weaver, Dax, Neptune, Ivy, Bailey, Tab, and Thursday? Alix, Ivy, and Bailey are of human origin. All the others came from other dimensions. None of them have names for what they are except for Adele and she refers to her race as “Shioan.” [Negative One readers will note that that's a misconception on her part. “Shioan” is indeed the name of her language, though.]

26. Can the pool go to other countries? Other dimensions? Other planets? It can go to other countries. With some very strange circumstances it can go to other dimensions. It cannot go to other planets, but the other dimensions are close enough to be considered as such in some cases.

27. What is wrong with Neptune? Why is she autistic? She wasn’t always. After her trip from her home dimension she lost a lot of herself. She now responds almost exactly like a regular human autistic.

28. How many bedrooms are there in THTIB? Thirteen.

29. How long is Ivy’s hair? About a yard long.

30. Did Ivy’s parents cause her conditions by taking experimental drugs/eating tainted food/living near a nuclear plant etc.? That’s unknown. They don’t think so. It’s likely she’s just a fortunate mutant.

31. What problems does Ivy run into because she doesn’t have pinkies? She can’t type or play the piano right. She can’t count months on her knuckles. She can’t give “high fives.” She can’t have a pinkie swear or wrap someone around her little finger. And she’d be severely incapacitated if she ever tried to learn sign language. Also she can’t wear traditional gloves.

32. What’s Ivy’s favorite color? Greenish yellow.

33. When’s Ivy’s birthday? July 31st.

34. Is Ivy an elf? Most commonly asked after just seeing her picture. NO.

35. Why is Ivy so skinny? She has a fast metabolism on top of having had no reason throughout her life to develop any muscle mass. There is also a theory that making her energy contributes to her inability to gain weight.

36. Is Ivy scared of anything? Her most obvious fear is claustrophobia—she gets a little irrational when she’s in a closed space. Otherwise, she might sometimes get scared but not overly so.
