Language Test: Answer Key
From this test.
28. Choose the sentence that DOES include an error.
- A. Somehow Dia never got callouses on her feet from walking around barefoot all the time.
- B. Your mucous membranes secrete mucus.
- C. It's important that you never allow anyone to talk you out of your closely held principles.
- D. My goodness, it's chock-full of beef jerky!
A is the only right answer. The correct word here is "calluses." An unfeeling person can be callous, but the parts of your skin that turn stiff and hard are callused.
The others:
- B features "mucous" and "mucus." They sound the same, but "mucous" is an adjective and "mucus" is a noun. So the membranes that are mucous can create mucus. Yum!
- C features "principles" spelled correctly. Some people substitute "principals." I don't think they're getting it mixed up with the school administrator so much as they're getting it mixed up with the "principal items"--the most important ones. But "principles" are the ideals you can hold to.
- D features the phrase "chock-full." Actually, it can also be "chuck-full." But some people write "chalk-full" and think that's the expression. It's not.
