School Assignment: Essay on The Chosen

Written November 3, 1993.

In the novel "The Chosen" by Chaim Potok, the two main characters, Danny Saunders and Reuven Malter, have relationships with their respective fathers that are in some ways the same and in other ways completely different.

Education is very important to both Danny's and Reuven's father. So is a good background in Jewish history and the study of the Talmud. Both Danny and Reuven had been raised as Orthodox Jews.

Education is important to both fathers, but where Danny goes to school is not the same place as where Reuven goes, because of the difference in their fathers' beliefs. Reuven goes to a school where Jewish subjects are taught in Hebrew, and Danny goes to a school established by his father. Danny comes from a Hasidic background, and Reuven does not. Furthermore, Reuven's father talks to him and Danny has been raised in silence.

Though both fathers encourage their children to study Talmud, Danny's quota is much larger than Reuven's, simply because his father expects more out of him. And although both Danny and Reuven wear black skullcaps, Danny's way of dressing is much more orthodox. Their fathers have conflicting views on the opening of a Jewish state: Danny's father is a hard-core anti-Zionist.

Danny and Reuven have very different backgrounds; they were raised very differently. This is only because of their fathers' different beliefs. Even though they grew up within five blocks of each other, essentially, they grew up in two completely different worlds.

[My comment: I got a 99 on this, and my teacher told me I need to underline instead of quote titles and commented that I had "Beautiful comparison and contrast!"]
