Abrahams, Kyria | I'm Perfect, You're Doomed | Heard about this cool concept for an autobio (about growing up Jehovah's Witness) and wanted to read it, so I bought it from an eBay store. |
Amos, Tori; Power, Ann | Piece by Piece | Gift from Mike! We both love Tori and we were interested to see what this not-so-typical biography had to say about her life. |
Andrews, Arin | Some Assembly Required | A memoir of a transgender teen which I received in my goody bag at the 2015 Lambda Awards. |
Bechdel, Alison | Are You My Mother? | I'd read Fun Home and loved it so much that I treated myself to the author's next book when I had an Amazon credit. |
Bechdel, Alison | Fun Home | I decided to buy her book because I was going to the Lambda Awards and she was listed as a speaker, and had had this book on my to-read list a long time, so I bit the bullet and bought it at a Barnes & Noble. |
Block, Francesca Lia | Guarding the Moon | I bought this because Ms. Block is one of my favorite authors in the young adult category, and I was interested to read this, her reflections on her first year as a mother. |
Chenoweth, Kristin; Rodgers, Joni | A Little Bit Wicked | Gift from Fred for my birthday, 2011. |
Farrow, Ronan | Catch and Kill | I saw the author talking about the events that led up to him writing this book and what he did to study style to write it, and that made me really want to read it, so I bought it secondhand. |
Feynman, Richard | "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!" | Mike bought me a used copy of this book at the book sale. |
Frank, Anne | Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl | Everyone's got to read it at least once in school. I wasn't much of a fan, but it was a touching story. |
Hirsch, Lily E. | Weird Al: Seriously | Analysis and interviews regarding Weird Al Yankovic. Given to me by my sister P for holiday 2021. |
Hitchens, Christopher | Mortality | Bought this from a sale table at the bookstore because I like the author's other work. |
Johnson, Kim "Howard" | Life Before and After Monty Python | A little collection of biographical information on the Monty Python team. I think I got it for a birthday. |
King, Stephen | On Writing | Though I've never written a horror story in my life, Stephen King, as far as his writing style goes, is one of my idols. We have a scarily similar way of constructing plots, which I found to be true in this profoundly amazing memoir of our shared craft. |
Kingsolver, Barbara | Small Wonder | Collection of essays by a favorite author. Mike picked it up for me at the book sale. |
McCourt, Frank | Angela's Ashes | Mike found this at the Friends of the Library Book Sale for me. |
McCurdy, Jennette | I'm Glad My Mom Died | Gift received in 2023. |
Mock, Janet | Redefining Realness | I bought this with a coupon at Barnes & Noble because I really wanted to read it before seeing the author at the Lambda Awards! |
Palahniuk, Chuck | Stranger Than Fiction | Stacy got this for my birthday, 2012. |
Pelzer, Dave | A Child Called "It" | I picked this up because I was trying to get work with its publisher (yeah, I eventually got it), and I thought I should be at least a little familiar with its work. This book has a typo on page 42 to this day, but don't blame me. This book made me feel sick, but that's because it detailed really horrible things, not because it was bad writing. (Wasn't great either, but very dramatic.) |
Pelzer, Dave | The Lost Boy | A continuation of A Child Called "It," where I became less sympathetic for the author because at this point a lot of the bad things that happened to him were his own fault. ('Course, he was severely screwed up from his experiences in the first book, so yeah, but ANYWAY.) Decided at that point not to get the third book, A Man Named Dave. |
Sleator, William | Oddballs | Slightly embellished childhood stories of the well-known children's science fiction author. HILARIOUS. Found this on our sale table for 97¢! |
Yon, Mike | Danger Close | I have several copies of this in my apartment, but that's because it was the first book I ever edited professionally, and the author gave me some copies. It's about his childhood, his experiences in the military, and his unexpected court case, very good read. |
