0:00:16.000,0:00:22.000 Hi! I'm swankivy, and I'm an asexuality educator and awareness activist. 0:00:22.000,0:00:27.000 And I'm here to teach you the basics of what asexuality is and why it's important. 0:00:32.000,0:00:39.000 Asexuality is a sexual orientation describing people who are not sexually attracted to anyone. That's it! 0:00:44.000,0:00:47.000 Behavior and orientation are two different things. 0:00:47.000,0:00:51.000 "Asexual" is not a synonym for "celibate" or "abstinent." 0:00:51.000,0:00:58.000 Many asexual people don't have sex because they don't find people sexually attractive, but there are many other reasons to have sex, 0:00:58.000,0:01:02.000 and people of any orientation may be having sex for those reasons. 0:01:05.000,0:01:09.000 Good question! Even if a person doesn't experience sexual attraction, 0:01:09.000,0:01:13.000 they may still have the capacity to experience romantic attraction. 0:01:13.000,0:01:18.000 Just like anyone else, asexual people do sometimes choose romantic partners, 0:01:18.000,0:01:22.000 and having sex in those relationships is not what makes them romantic. 0:01:22.000,0:01:27.000 Some people desire interpersonal connection and partnership even without sexual attraction, 0:01:27.000,0:01:31.000 and many asexual people do still desire physical and emotional intimacy. 0:01:31.000,0:01:38.000 They may or may not like kissing and cuddling, and they may or may not feel sensual or aesthetic attraction, 0:01:38.000,0:01:42.000 and many still want a life partner. What decisions they make regarding sex 0:01:42.000,0:01:45.000 in those relationships is only up to the people involved. 0:01:49.000,0:01:54.000 Asexual people's romantic desires are sometimes dependent on gender or gender presentation, 0:01:54.000,0:01:58.000 so labels exist for those just like they do for anyone else. 0:01:58.000,0:02:04.000 If you're romantically attracted to cross-sex or cross-gender partners, you're heteroromantic. 0:02:04.000,0:02:10.000 If you're romantically attracted to same-sex or same-gender partners, you're homoromantic. 0:02:10.000,0:02:19.000 If you're romantically attracted to both your same sex or gender AND you're romantically attracted to another sex or gender, you're biromantic. 0:02:19.000,0:02:26.000 If you're romantically attracted to multiple sexes or genders but not ALL sexes and genders, you're polyromantic. 0:02:26.000,0:02:32.000 And if you're romantically attracted to people regardless of sex or gender, you're panromantic. 0:02:32.000,0:02:37.000 Keep in mind that people who are NOT asexual can also have these romantic orientations 0:02:37.000,0:02:41.000 and they're not necessarily tied to their sexual orientation. 0:02:41.000,0:02:44.000 There are also people like me, who are AROMANTIC. 0:02:44.000,0:02:48.000 I'm not romantically attracted to anyone, so I don't want a romantic partner. 0:02:48.000,0:02:54.000 Some aromantic people still want a partner of some kind, just not in a romantic sense. 0:02:54.000,0:03:00.000 Partners with deep emotional connections don't necessarily have to base their bond on sexual or romantic attraction. 0:03:00.000,0:03:05.000 These partnerships may be intimate friendships, queerplatonic partnerships, 0:03:05.000,0:03:09.000 or any number of other close relationships with various benefits. 0:03:09.000,0:03:13.000 What's important is that the people involved get to define what their bond is, 0:03:13.000,0:03:20.000 and that it shouldn't be defined by traditional beliefs about what makes a relationship romantic or intimate or "real." 0:03:24.000,0:03:30.000 Sexual interest and romanticism are on a continuum, so there are definitely gray areas. 0:03:30.000,0:03:38.000 Some people identify as GRAY-ASEXUAL (or graysexual), which usually means they very rarely experience sexual attraction 0:03:38.000,0:03:43.000 and have a lot in common with asexual people when it comes to everyday life experiences. 0:03:43.000,0:03:46.000 Some people identify as GRAY-ROMANTIC, 0:03:46.000,0:03:53.000 which usually means they very rarely experience romantic attraction and might feel aromantic most of the time. 0:03:53.000,0:03:59.000 Some people identify as DEMISEXUAL, which usually means they may be capable of sexual attraction 0:03:59.000,0:04:02.000 toward certain people with whom they have developed an emotional bond, 0:04:02.000,0:04:06.000 but never feel sexual attraction toward people they don't know. 0:04:06.000,0:04:13.000 Some people identify as DEMI-ROMANTIC, which usually means they may start becoming romantically attracted to someone 0:04:13.000,0:04:16.000 only after developing other emotional bonds with them. 0:04:16.000,0:04:24.000 Please note that demisexuality and demiromanticism aren't about willingness to have sex or willingness to be in a relationship. 0:04:24.000,0:04:31.000 Some people misunderstand these orientations as if people identifying as demi must be taking a moral stance 0:04:31.000,0:04:35.000 on sex or dating before being "in love," but that's not the case at all. 0:04:35.000,0:04:41.000 It's about actually not being able to feel attraction without emotional involvement, not necessarily love, 0:04:41.000,0:04:45.000 which means a demi person will never have that attraction to a stranger. 0:04:45.000,0:04:49.000 Just like anyone else, gray and demi people may or may not have sex or be in relationships 0:04:49.000,0:04:55.000 without sexual or romantic attraction. Orientation is about attraction, not behavior. 0:05:01.000,0:05:06.000 Some do, some don't. It varies a lot, just like with everyone else-- 0:05:06.000,0:05:11.000 the only difference with asexual people is that they're not sexually attracted to anyone. 0:05:11.000,0:05:13.000 They may or may not have a libido. 0:05:17.000,0:05:20.000 Some masturbate, some don't. Just like with anyone else. 0:05:20.000,0:05:26.000 They may or may not have accompanying fantasies, and they may just consider it a pleasurable experience without connecting it to sex. 0:05:31.000,0:05:38.000 Asexuality is not a physical condition. Hormonal imbalances cause issues other than lack of sexual interest, 0:05:38.000,0:05:43.000 but if a does person suspect that they may have a medical condition, they can get tested by a doctor. 0:05:43.000,0:05:48.000 Lack of sexual attraction to other people is not an automatic sign of hormonal imbalance. 0:05:52.000,0:05:56.000 A psychological condition called Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder does exist. 0:05:56.000,0:06:04.000 One of the conditions for being diagnosed with HSDD is that the suffering person experiences distress over their disinterest. 0:06:04.000,0:06:10.000 You also usually can't get a diagnosis of HSDD if you've had a lifelong experience of disinterest. 0:06:10.000,0:06:17.000 If an asexual person wants to see a mental health professional to deal with any sex-related issues, 0:06:17.000,0:06:23.000 that's completely up to them, but it shouldn't be treated as if it's something that the person needs to learn how to get over. 0:06:27.000,0:06:32.000 I really recommend that you don't ever suggest this to an asexual person, 0:06:32.000,0:06:36.000 because abuse experiences are personal and they shouldn't be brought up 0:06:36.000,0:06:41.000 outside of safe conversations that the possible victim has agreed to. 0:06:41.000,0:06:45.000 But regardless of whether an asexual person has been abused in some way, 0:06:45.000,0:06:49.000 you shouldn't assume that their orientation is an avoidant response. 0:06:49.000,0:06:53.000 Asexuality is a lack of attraction, not a fear response. 0:06:58.000,0:07:04.000 It doesn't matter if someone who's asexual is physically attractive; their orientation should always be respected, 0:07:04.000,0:07:08.000 not blamed on being ugly or unable to get a date. 0:07:09.000,0:07:15.000 In any population there's a spectrum of attractiveness. Asexual people aren't calling themselves asexual to cover 0:07:15.000,0:07:20.000 for not being able to get dates, and most asexual people have the usual opportunities. 0:07:26.000,0:07:31.000 Not all asexual people hate sex or refuse to have sex. Some even like it, 0:07:31.000,0:07:34.000 even without having sexual attraction to their partners. 0:07:34.000,0:07:40.000 Most are indifferent or repulsed, but regardless of that, whether they have sex anyway is highly individual. 0:07:47.000,0:07:52.000 Again, asexual people aren't about hating sex. They're just not attracted to other people sexually. 0:07:52.000,0:07:57.000 That doesn't mean they couldn't like sex, but they need to be trusted as to whether they want to try it. 0:07:57.000,0:08:02.000 They have to be in control of those experiences without other people pressuring them. 0:08:02.000,0:08:07.000 If straight people can "know" that they won't like gay sex without trying it, 0:08:07.000,0:08:13.000 then asexual people shouldn't be considered some kind of special class of people whose feelings can't be trusted 0:08:13.000,0:08:18.000 and therefore should be harassed into inviting sexual experiences they don't want. 0:08:18.000,0:08:26.000 Besides, you can't prove a negative; if we do try sex and we're still not experiencing sexual attraction to potential partners, 0:08:26.000,0:08:30.000 we just get told we did it wrong, or with the wrong gender, or with the wrong person, 0:08:30.000,0:08:33.000 or ruined the whole experience by expecting to hate it. 0:08:33.000,0:08:38.000 Some people won't stop pressuring us until we stop identifying as asexual, 0:08:38.000,0:08:43.000 so we need to be the ones who are allowed to draw our boundaries as to what experiences we want to invite. 0:08:47.000,0:8:54.000 People who think they're straight can be gay and confused too, but the point is NO orientation should be automatically questioned. 0:08:54.000,0:09:00.000 Some people just need time to figure themselves out, and actually a lot of asexual people assume that they must be gay 0:09:00.000,0:09:04.000 if they're not straight due to lack of education about our orientation even existing. 0:09:09.000,0:09:12.000 Gender and sexual orientation are not the same thing. 0:09:12.000,0:09:16.000 You can be transgender and be asexual, but that doesn't mean you're "confused." 0:09:16.000,0:09:20.000 Same with genderqueer, agender, gender fluid, and everybody else who's non-binary. 0:09:25.000,0:09:29.000 It doesn't matter how old someone is. Don't invalidate them. 0:09:29.000,0:09:35.000 Straight ten-year-olds are allowed and sometimes even encouraged to pursue cross-gender crushes. 0:09:35.000,0:09:41.000 But if a teenager comes out as asexual, they're immediately told they're not old enough to know how they feel, 0:09:41.000,0:09:48.000 and if an older asexual person comes out, they're told that their orientation is actually a symptom of a waning sex drive. 0:09:48.000,0:09:54.000 Yes, what stage of life you're at intersects with what you want, but don't look at somebody's time on the planet 0:09:54.000,0:09:57.000 and use it to tell them that what they're feeling isn't real. 0:10:01.000,0:10:06.000 Sure, maybe. Just like any straight person may not have met the right gay partner 0:10:06.000,0:10:08.000 to show them their "real" orientation. 0:10:08.000,0:10:14.000 It's ALWAYS true with human relationships that we might discover something new about ourselves at any time. 0:10:14.000,0:10:20.000 But it's ALSO true that you shouldn't use this fact to treat people like their orientation is temporary. 0:10:26.000,0:10:32.000 No, not as a group. Individual people of all different kinds of orientations have different feelings about sex 0:10:32.000,0:10:38.000 and they may try to control or limit other people's sex lives, but being asexual isn't a moral statement 0:10:38.000,0:10:42.000 and it doesn't mean we think we're above you, even if we're abstinent. 0:10:42.000,0:10:48.000 We're not a religious group and we're not an organization for social control. We're just not attracted to other people sexually. 0:10:53.000,0:10:58.000 Then they can pursue procreation or parenting in all the same ways that are available to anyone else. 0:10:58.000,0:11:05.000 Some asexual people want kids, and some don't. And they can pursue traditional childbirth, surrogacy, 0:11:05.000,0:11:09.000 adoption, or all kinds of alternative fertilization methods. 0:11:09.000,0:11:15.000 Plenty of asexual people want to be parents, and they're not necessarily opposed to having sex to get them, 0:11:15.000,0:11:18.000 but if that's not an option, there are plenty of other avenues. 0:11:23.000,0:11:28.000 Sometimes we are included in queer activism and invited into queer spaces. 0:11:28.000,0:11:33.000 We are, after all, a sexual minority, even if we don't share some experiences with LGBT people 0:11:33.000,0:11:37.000 unless we are LGBT in addition to being asexual. 0:11:37.000,0:11:42.000 It's up to individuals if they want to identify as queer or associate with the community, 0:11:42.000,0:11:47.000 and it's up to individual people and individual communities as to whether they want to invite asexual people 0:11:47.000,0:11:50.000 to join them and what services they'd like to provide. 0:11:55.000,0:12:01.000 Sure. Just like with anyone else, sometimes an asexual person is comfortable in a poly relationship-- 0:12:01.000,0:12:07.000 especially since if the asexual person does not desire partnered sex, the other partners can satisfy their sexual desires 0:12:07.000,0:12:12.000 with each other, and then still give everyone in the group the kind of intimacy that they want. 0:12:12.000,0:12:19.000 And even some people who aren't asexual satisfy desires that are not related to sexual attraction to the partner 0:12:19.000,0:12:25.000 through BDSM and kinky activities, so of course some asexual people may enjoy those practices. 0:12:32.000,0:12:38.000 It's unlikely asexual people need to be sheltered from sexual content in media or normal conversation. 0:12:38.000,0:12:45.000 Feel free to ask if you're worried, but for the most part, most asexual people aren't any more ignorant about sex 0:12:45.000,0:12:48.000 or any more sensitive to seeing it in media than the rest of the population. 0:12:54.000,0:13:02.000 Things that exist have words so we can talk about them. Most people in the world believe that asexuality isn't a real thing, 0:13:02.000,0:13:05.000 and asexual people are hurt by that assumption. 0:13:05.000,0:13:10.000 Not having words for our orientation means we can't find other people like ourselves 0:13:10.000,0:13:14.000 and we're more susceptible to being pressured into becoming what we're not. 0:13:14.000,0:13:20.000 Even when labels aren't 100% accurate all the time, they let us have these conversations, and we need them. 0:13:25.000,0:13:32.000 Current estimations suggest that about 1% of the population is asexual, based on a large survey from 2004. 0:13:32.000,0:13:38.000 If 1% doesn't sound like very much, just remember that's over three million people just in the United States. 0:13:38.000,0:13:43.000 You have probably met asexual people, or maybe you are one. 0:13:43.000,0:13:50.000 But since most people are assumed straight if they're not gay, you probably didn't even know it. They probably don't even know it, 0:13:50.000,0:13:53.000 because education about our orientation is not widespread yet. 0:13:59.000,0:14:04.000 If you'd like to help spread awareness about asexuality and be a good ally, keep the following things in mind: 0:14:04.000,0:14:09.000 Listen and believe asexual people, and if they reveal their orientation to you, 0:14:09.000,0:14:13.000 don't treat them like they have to prove or justify how they feel. 0:14:13.000,0:14:19.000 Watch your blanket statements when discussing sexuality. It alienates and erases asexual people 0:14:19.000,0:14:26.000 every time you say stuff like "Everyone needs sex" or equate sexual attraction with being "really" alive or "really" human. 0:14:26.000,0:14:33.000 If you're involved in sex education or research, make sure options exist for acknowledging asexuality 0:14:33.000,0:14:36.000 and allowing asexual people to report their orientation. 0:14:36.000,0:14:39.000 (It's very common on surveys for asexual people to have to lie 0:14:39.000,0:14:44.000 or choose "no response" or "not telling" if they're filling out their orientation.) 0:14:44.000,0:14:49.000 If you have a question but the topic is possibly sensitive, ask if you can ask. 0:14:49.000,0:14:56.000 Know where to find resources for more information. I'll include some links for you in the information box. 0:14:56.000,0:14:00.000 I hope this video has been informative, and feel free to contact me 0:15:00.000,0:15:04.000 if you have any questions or requests. Thanks very much for watching.
